Bea Bonafini is an Italian artist whose practice spans painting, tapestry and ceramics. Her body of work intertwines personal and shared mythologies to create a dream-like imaginarium that is inspired by ancestral artefacts, primordial rituals and cross-cultural spiritual beliefs. In her recent fieldwork in Malta as part of the ArtExplora residency, Bonafini visited Neolithic temples to study some of the world’s oldest places of worship and spiritual artefacts. Building on that research, she has created a new, site-specific installation at the Monastery of Sant Cugat, for which the artist has taken over an excavated site in the inner courtyard. Here, she has placed four fragmented, corpulent female forms next to each other; in this ‘spooning’ position, they appear to be participating in a transcendental or funerary ritual. Their bodies recalling the voluptuous forms of many prehistoric figures, the goddesses propose joint sleep as a kind of cure; namely, they suggest that non-sexual intimacy and similar forms of harmonious embrace can provide emotional relief. 2024
