Since the 19th century, the coast of Murcia has witnessed a tripartite process of extraction that has progressed through mining, real estate speculation and intensive agriculture. This process has led to ecological degradation and the mass death of fauna in the Mar Menor, Europe’s largest saltwater lagoon, part of Campo de Cartagena in Southeast Spain. In the name of so-called “progress”, reckless and even criminal attitudes have accumulated and fomented today’s climate emergency. The summer of 2022 was the hottest on record at the time. The precipitous rise of temperatures is perhaps the most visible effect of climate change, but certainly not the only one. In his short film essay, which brings together an ensemble of interviews that he conducted with neighbours, activists, scientists and artists, Lorenzo Sandoval explores the roots of the cosmovision that substantiates and perpetuates extractivism in the area, while probing different strategies for resisting the matrix of practices that it entails. In September 2022, the Spanish Parliament passed Law 19/2022, which recognises the Mar Menor as a legal entity, granting it a set of explicit rights meant to protect it from destructive human actions.
