"Memory of the Smoke: Eco-Social Conflicts in Sacrifice Zones" is an exhibition curated by Manifesta 15 Barcelona Metropolitana and the Observatori de la Vida Quotidiana (OVQ). Located on the second floor of the iconic Three Chimneys in Sant Adrià de Besòs, it explores the concept of “sacrifice zones.” Focusing on Sant Adrià de Besòs, where industrial activity has caused environmental harm yet fostered a strong community identity, the exhibition celebrates grassroots movements advocating for environmental preservation, social justice, and urban regeneration.

The exhibition, created in collaboration with local residents and organisations, features a memory room and an activities programme under the title Conversations at the Factory. Highlights include discussions about the 1966 women-led protests against industrial soot and debates on the environmental and urban challenges in Sant Adrià. Notable activities also include a temporary exhibition and a concert as part of the 2nd Congress on Gendered Anti-Gypsyism.

The series will conclude on 23 November with a collective reading of Javier Pérez Andújar’s novel Paseos con mi madre. Participants will explore the essence of the Besòs Delta, highlighting its shared history and culture. This event serves as a fitting conclusion to the programme and the exhibition archive, which will remain on display until 24 November.
