The Italian artist Chiara Camoni dissolves the distance between objects and artwork (i.e. between arts and crafts) by making work that is open to more than one interpretation. The vases on view at Casa Gomis are indicative of this distinguishing characteristic of Camoni’s body of work. They could have belonged to Ricardo Gomis Serdañons and his wife Inés Bertrand Mata when they were still residing in the house with their family; the couple had a particular affection for ceramic vases, especially those from Japan, which they displayed prominently in their living room. There is an atemporal dimension to Camoni’s vases, as their forms travel through time, from antiquity to today. The Vasi-Farfalla have zoomorphic shapes. Camoni compares the metamorphosis of the butterfly with how she brings her vases into being, describing a creative process that is delicate, at times scary and always magical. In the words of the artist: “I make a Vase and I remake the World.”
