The Senegalese artist Seyni Awa Camara’s body of work focuses on the idea of the archetypal family. The artist uses artmaking as a means to exorcise her trauma and heal her wounds of being unable to bear children in a highly stratified society, where motherhood is the primary means for women to gain permission to participate in the community. Belonging to the caste of artisans, Camara was destined to become a traditional potter. However, after participating in an initiation ritual with her twin brothers that involved forest spirits, she decided against making utilitarian objects, and instead committed herself to sculpting her own stories – scenes that are true to both her reality and vision of the world as well as emblematic of her dreams. Her artistic process begins with her making sacrifices to the forest spirits, so that they reveal to her the forms that she should create. The work that she subsequently makes often interprets what it means to be a woman, different stages of motherhood and kin relations. In the funerary temple of the Church of St. Michael, Camara’s sculptures connect the world of the spirits with her visions of a joyous, repaired, life-affirming future.
