Kiluanji Kia Henda’s The Frankenstein Treemeditates on the extraordinary power of nature to heal itself, even after catastrophic climate events and war. The work follows and continues some of the research and concerns of the Angolan artist’s series The Restless Landscape (2017-ongoing), which began with a series of photographs that the Angolan artist took on a national road in the interior of his home country. The transportation artery had been the scene of some of the most intense fighting during the Angolan Civil War (1975-2002). With The Frankenstein Tree, the artist extends his inquiry to metropolitan Barcelona. Bricolaged with recycled wooden boards, broken tree branches and the remains of trees that were burned in wildfires that struck El Pont de Vilomara in 2022 and 2023, the work gestures towards how nature defies expectations in the face of humankind’s devastating interventions, reconstituting itself in extreme, even defiant ways.
