The Eleventh Year marks the 11th anniversary of the 1917 October Revolution. The film celebrates the Soviet Union’s leap into modernity by focusing on the construction of the Dnipro Hydropower Station (Dnipro HPS), a strategic public works project, as well as other electrification milestones in Ukraine that testified to the growing dictatorial empire’s engineering might. In making his unscripted, propagandistic film, Vertov uses his signature “kino-eye” (cinema-eye) technique, generating the plot through experimental, agitated camera movements. Like the Dnipro HPS, which were destroyed in World War II and subsequently rebuilt, the Three Chimneys also embodied an industrial, political, economic and social dream for the future when they were erected. In their decommissioned state, they likewise speak to a fraught line of thinking that utopia can be reached through industrial development. What is the new utopia for energy production?
The Eleventh Year was recently restored by the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Centre in Kyiv, which re-released the film with newly-composed music. The Dnipro HPS was heavily damaged by Russian missiles in the spring of 2024, making the historical footage even more startlingly consequential today.
