How do tablecloths represent those who use them in daily life? What memories are engraved in the fibres of these domestic fabrics? For Gözde İlkin, such fabrics carry collective memory and are indicative of cultural codes. With and through them, İlkin reflects upon the construction of social identity, traditional challenges of family models, the oppression that stems from asymmetrical power relationships and the construction of gender roles within the private and public spheres. On these fabrics, which the artist from Türkiye inherited from her mother and grandmother or retrieved from other places where she has lived, she embroiders figures and scenes from her family’s photo archive. Notably, she does not directly copy the source images, but rather interprets them to construct her own scenes. In the work on display, which is from the series Inverted Home, she embodies how forgotten memories can be reconfigured to create new domestic mythologies through traditions, following the traces of different possibilities of (co)existence and kinship bonds between humans, animals and plants. İlkin’s conceptual and visual proposal is closely connected with the thematic discussion of Balancing Conflicts, notably with regards to balancing the desire for economic growth and the need to find other forms of co-habitation and of respecting and promoting a shared existence on the planet.
