Since the 15th century, various structures have been erected to protect the coast of Barcelona. One of the latest iterations was installed in 2003 – five reefs set up two kilometres off the coast. These artificial environments were formed by submerging around three hundred concrete elements at a depth of twenty metres. Marine life has populated the reefs in the past two decades, creating a thriving ecosystem and defying reductive ideas of a nature-culture binary. The Institute for Postnatural Studies and Juan Pablo Pacheco Bejarano researched these infrastructures with the intent to understand what they can tell us about the future of the coastal seabed. Their research led them to create The Symphony of the Artificial Reef, an acoustic exploration of the reef, filled with its clicking lives, the roars of cargo vessels, the sonars of survey ships and the hum of buried telecommunications cables. The sound work, commissioned for Manifesta 15, appears in two locations. Along the Paseo Marítimo, the symphony unfolds across five flags, affixed with QR codes that link to the sound of each reef. At the Three Chimneys, the symphony can be heard in its entirety. This project is co-produced by Disseny Hub Barcelona, where part of it will be shown during Manifesta 15.
