The Dutch-Filipino artist Martha Atienza’s film Sugdan Ko is part of a trilogy dedicated to the marine environment of Bantayan Island and the other islands in its vicinity. The film is the result of a workshop run by GOODLand Association, a grassroots organisation that Atienza leads. The workshop was held at Mambacayao Daku Island with a group of young residents, who are dedicated to securing the future of their home and its natural surroundings. The film calls for the sea surrounding the island to be registered as a Marine Protected Area; following the film’s creation, this legal status was granted.
Sugdan Ko testifies to the power of youth-driven climate initiatives and the transformative potential of communities uniting in pursuit of a common goal. The film likewise advocates that it does not suffice to wait for top-down directives for preserving the environment; rather, environmental stewardship starts with each committed and vested action that we take.
