Jokkoo takes its name from the word for ‘connection’ in Wolof, a Senegalese language. Their practice brings many different energies, aesthetics and forms of expression together, engaging with experimental Black music and multidisciplinary creation. For Manifesta 15, the collective teamed up with cantdefine.me, a creative duo with heritage in Africa and Abya Yala, whose audio-visual practice aims to serve as a safe space for imagination.
Sonido Invisible consists of a two-channel audio-visual installation created in collaboration with the communities who collect and recycle metal in Barcelona – communities which are denied their human right to work and housing upon arrival in Europe, many of whose members hail from the African diaspora.
This piece is only a snapshot of the friendship and creative collaboration between Jokkoo, cantdefine.me and the three young people they met living and working in the streets of Barcelona. The aim was, and still is, to share space, time and imaginaries, finding the links between the daily search for value in the refuse of the city, with the creative process of sonic recycling, sharing ways of moving through, perceiving and transforming the raw materials of our urban environment.
