As populations age, there is an urgent need to rethink the future of assisted living. In partnership with the Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial [Institute of Robotics and Industrial Informatics] (IRI UPC-CSIC) in Barcelona, the Catalan electronic artist Mónica Rikić explores the means of production and social impact of care robotics. Focusing on touch and behaviour, Rikić manipulates robotic hardware and edits code with a hacker-like attitude to reflect various social-political concerns. Somoure centres on Nyam, a robotic arm designed at IRI that feeds those who cannot feed themselves. To make the installation, Rikić gathered input on the presence and impact of robots in care work from specialists in the arts and humanities, industrial designers, representatives of domestic labour unions and other activists. Responding to her interlocutors’ input, the installation presents care robotics not as a technological problem that needs to be solved, but as a network of interconnections that shape our expectations of what changing demographics will bring.
The audiovisual pieces have been created in collaboration with the artist Agustina Isidori. Original soundtrack by Rodolfo Venegas.
