The Catalan artist Fina Miralles played a key role in the Spanish conceptual art movement of the 1970s, during which she produced a body of work that suggests a new cosmology. With this work, Miralles proposes a fusion between humans and nature through the usage of natural elements. At the same time, she was interested in abolishing the divide between popular expressions and the so-called “high culture”, advocating for an art that is not merely an elite pastime, but an essential element of our shared existence, aiming to restructure social tenets that she deemed outmoded. In her 1975 series Relació del cos amb elements naturals, Miralles continues the approach that she had started earlier that decade of offering her body to nature.In a series of photo-actions, one of which has been reprinted for this occasion, her (female) body is progressively engulfed by sand, stones, earth and straw. By virtue of her leveraging of simple natural materials and her merging and becoming one with nature, through this series, Miralles appeals for a harmonious coexistence with the natural world.
