Escoles en Lluita (Schools in Struggle) emerged in Barcelona in 1976-77 – during the early years of the democratic transition after Franco’s dictatorship. With a membership comprised of educators, students, political activists, intellectuals and artists, this grassroots movement advocated for high-quality public education and struggled against exploitation in disadvantaged neighbourhoods along the Besòs River. To accomplish their objectives, the movement organised strikes, held demonstrations and occupied public space, confronting systematic injustices while helping shape a more equitable society in post-Franco Spain.
For her project Recordaremos aquello que aprendisteis, the artist Anaïs Florin created a dedicated archive about Escoles en Lluita. The archive brings together a variety of materials, including photographs, press clippings, posters, magazines and other documents, many of which were previously unpublished. To compile this archive, the artist visited institutional and self-managed archives in Barcelona and conducted interviews with former teachers, students and directors from the schools that participated in the movement.
Following the conclusion of Manifesta 15 Barcelona Metropolitana, the archive will be handed over to the Historic Archive of Roquetes – Nou Barris, ensuring that it will be preserved and made publicly accessible.
