The Chilean artist Enrique Ramírez works across a diverse array of mediums to reflect upon the state of the world and the social, political and ecological challenges of humanity, with a particular emphasis on the sea. His neon, text-based work greets us at the entrance of Casa Gomis. This light poem quotes Gilles Clément, a gardener, landscape architect and writer who developed the theory of the “planetary garden” in response to the phenomenon of globalisation. Clément proposes that humankind step into the role of gardener and guardian of the planet (a theme that was explored extensively in Manifesta 12 Palermo). Ramírez’s work could symbolise the garden as a site of resistance, requiring a different temporality from the one that we currently live in. Perhaps the solution for the conflicts that we face is to slow down and reflect on how to move beyond an exaltation – and the oppression – of the here and now, instead focusing on what eternity means for our planetary garden, and how we can contribute to cultivating it.
