The first lines of Giorgio Vasta’s script for the Italian artist duo MASBEDO’s film Pantelleria read: “the 14th of June 1943 in Pantelleria. And it never happened, that much is certain, there is no doubt that it did happen, but it never happened.” The film centres on the ahistorical events that happened a few days after Pantelleria, an island in Italy, was bombarded by the Allied forces. British and American troops enacted a second air raid, bombing a few buildings just for the sake of filming the war in progress. The need to document the war to sustain morale back home was intimately connected with extreme experimentation with propagandistic tools.
The result of a two-year-long communal act of remembering and healing with island residents, the film collides the past with the present, contemplating the morals and misuse of ideological manipulation and the difficulty of determining where truth lies among the ruins. Installed at Can Jonch. Cultural Centre for Peace, in a city that itself was bombed in the early 20th century, Pantelleria asks whether there can be a war without images, mourning how the documentation of atrocity is weaponised for ideological, economic and political gain.
