The Colombian artist Carolina Caycedo’s ongoing series Mineral Intensive addresses the World Bank report Minerals for Climate Action: The Mineral Intensity of the Clean Energy Transition, which anticipates that the extraction of minerals, such as copper, lithium and cobalt, could increase nearly 500% by 2050, to meet the growing demand for "clean" energy technologies. A large proportion of the known reserves of these critical minerals are located in the so-called “Global South”.
Collaging elements from her existing Mineral Intensive drawings – Aluminium, Cobalt, Copper, Gold, Graphite, Iron, Lithium, Nickel, Silver (2022–2024) – the artist probes the labour and environmental implications of the accelerating boom in critical materials for energy, especially how it will affect the asymmetric relation between the Global North and South. Taking into account that the North’s ecological debt to the South will exponentially increase if outmoded extractivist logics persist, Caycedo’s new tapestry not only highlights this vicious cycle of inequality and destruction, but also calls for a radically reimagined global ecosocial justice system – for the just energy transition and beyond.
