From the outset of her career, which started in the 1960s, Aurèlia Muñoz took a profound interest in tapestry’s sculptural possibilities. Back then, and until very recently, textile art was considered a minor art, associated with women’s decorative crafts. Throughout her career, Muñoz unravelled this reductive stereotype, claiming her place as a contemporary artist while reinventing her chosen medium and simultaneously challenging the limits of sculpture and drawing. While her trajectory was singular, her artistic inquiries also had compelling points of contact with artistic peers from other parts of the planet, including Robert Morris.
Experiments in spatial geometry, Muñoz’s textile sculptures – with varying transparencies and planes that cross and intersect – foster intimate dialogues between form and space. They are as modern as they are ancient, inspired by natural phenomena, Leonardo da Vinci’s studies in aerodynamics as well as aerial navigation systems that were developed during her lifetime. At the Three Chimneys, Manifesta 15 presents a bird-like work by Muñoz, which looks for the wind and forms a deep bond with the architecture of the former power station.
