Jonathas de Andrade explores power dynamics and conflicts in contemporary society with a particular focus on Brazil. In this film, Andrade tracks a group of young workers from a private zoo in Alagoas, a state in Brazil, as they peacefully interact with snakes. The camera zooms in on parts of the worker’s bodies, specifically their eyes, ears, mouths, feet and noses, referencing the senses that we use to make sense of, and connect to, our environment. While the relationship between the humans and the snakes appears to be an intimate one, it is difficult to shirk a sense of anguish when watching the film. Who experiences the titular “knot in the throat”, that overwhelming feeling that makes it hard to speak, or even breathe? Is it the workers, the snakes or us – the viewers? By interspersing documentary footage of ecological disasters throughout the film, Andrade insinuates that the “knot in the throat” is a byproduct of our losing our ability to meaningfully protect, let alone connect with nature. Presented in the garden of the Natural Science Museum, the film is a reminder that respecting the sanctity of other species, especially those that we have placed under our care, requires a delicate touch.
