Transductores is an interdisciplinary platform for research and mediation, whose work focuses on collective pedagogies, collaborative artmaking and public interventions. For Manifesta 15, Transductores presents an artistic, environmental and community memory project in El Rec Comtal, a small canal running between Montcada i Reixac and the Barcelona neighbourhood of Vallbona.
The project, Memòries de l’aigua, collects memories of the canal’s past uses, connecting these memories with how communities engage with the canal today. The project reveals that four of the main modes of engagement are: the cleaning of the canal, the washing of clothes, the irrigation of crops and the wetting of cardboard by cartoneros (mainly Romani people who sell cardboard) to increase the weight of lorries. In the process, the project recalls historic water management policies and reflects upon environmental justice.
Memòries de l’aigua takes the form of a wooden climate shelter placed in a square next to the canal. The shelter was built with the participation of youth who are living in the Cal Miralpeix reception centre. The project also includes a booklet featuring images and voices of the different uses of water as well as a community event to activate the shelter. The project was done in collaboration with El Rec es Mou!, in a framework of public-community dialogue, to which various neighbourhood constituents contributed.
