Montse Cruz was one of the few women who worked in the chemical lab of Roca Umbert’s textile factory. Furthermore, she was the only one who had access to La Tèrmica (the thermal station), where she collected water samples for analysis. She describes the room as dark and gloomy, with air that smelled of iron; her impressions are similar to those that we still experience today. In La Tèrmica, Cruz performed tasks that demanded meticulousness and were necessary for the factory’s continued functioning. She referred to the tasks as “the small things”. For Alba G. Corral, the collective care that women like Cruz put into their tasks at the factory sharply contrasts with the textile industry’s steep ecological impact and extractive qualities as well as the strict, male-dominated hierarchy at the factory at the time. To reckon with this contrast, the artist used programming software to make an abstract and generative audiovisual work. Inspired by the resilience of working women, the work prompts reflection on the small, yet essential details that often go unnoticed and, in many cases, sustain the ecosystems of care.
