Carlos Pérez Siquier is a leading figure in the history of photography in Spain. He is celebrated as a pioneer of colour photography and as the co-founder, together with José María Artero, of AFAL – a magazine and photography group based in Almería. Over the course of the 1970s, Pérez Siquier photographed Spanish beaches for the Ministry of Tourism to use in its promotional campaigns, helping create the visual identity for a tourism industry based on the principles of high volumes and low costs. The series of photographs that he created, which is named for its subject, were so provocative that it took 20 years to be publicly exhibited. The photographs themselves are humorous and grotesque, testifying to the birth of mass tourism on the Spanish Mediterranean and also anticipating the so-called “overtourism” that Spain, and particularly Barcelona, is experiencing today. Fast-forward from the 1970s to now, the exponential growth of tourism has led to calls to expand Barcelona’s airport, a prospective public works project that would have a devastating impact on the Llobregat Delta Nature Reserve and on Casa Gomis itself.
