The late Catalan artist Antoni Tàpies was a frequent visitor to the Casa Gomis, an active cultural hub during Franco’s dictatorship. Manifesta 15 pays homage to this major figure of the Catalan (and world) art scene, who was closely attuned to social and political events, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s, when he lobbied forcefully against the dictatorship. Indeed, as the authoritarian regime consolidated power, his work became more politicised and confrontational. Throughout his long and storied career, Tàpies’ visual language was inspired by a wide array of sources that he brought together in a complex fusion of materials, gestures and symbols. One of the fixtures of his iconography is the cross. While this work on paper can be considered abstract, the use of the cross is neither innocent nor accidental, possibly insinuating disapproval or, even stronger, denunciation. Included as the centrefold of his exhibition catalogue at Galerie Maeght in Zürich, this work is notable for the mode of its distribution, indicating how Tàpies used different, democratic streams to disseminate his anti-dictatorial message to a pan-European audience.
