The Catalan artist Lola Lasurt works with memory, history and collective identities. For Manifesta 15 Barcelona Metropolitana, Lasurt proposed an artistic investigation into Els Amics del Sol (Friends of the Sun), a pioneering naturalist movement that was formed in Barcelona in the summer of 1915 by members of the sports and hiking sections of the Ateneu Enciclopèdic Popular (Popular Encyclopedic Athenaeum). The group used to frequent the now defunct Can Tunis Beach as well as the beaches on the Llobregat side of Barcelona, including El Prat (where Casa Gomis sits today) and Gavà. Lasurt’s project has three parts: a presentation of selected archive materials, documents and testimonials of the movement; the artist’s pictorial interpretation of the group’s activities in the form of a two-part frieze interpreting their rhythmic gymnastics exercises; and a series of public reenactments and artistic drifts in the form of three choreographed walks along the beaches. Lasurt’s interest in Els Amics del Sol lies in the fact that its members, like so many people today, strove to find alternative ways to connect to, experience and live with nature.
