In a career spanning more than five decades, the Swiss artist Annette Barcelo has created a body of work that is populated by a mysterious bestiary of creatures that hybridise human and more-than-human beings and inhabit a world of constant transformations and metamorphoses. Like shapeshifters, animals become humans and vice-versa, in a manner that is not only conflictual, but also caring – and even sensual. As if inhabiting a parallel dimension, her work conjures old folk tales, mythologies, pagan traditions, totemic figures and the “unnatural”. At the same time, they embody deeply human experiences and the artist’s personal stories and memories. Driven by wonder, insatiable curiosity and angst, Barcelo’s work is profoundly enigmatic and challenges conventional ideas of the relations between humans and animals. In this series, animals become women’s hairstyles – perhaps it is their natural hair, a wig or a temporary adornment for a special occasion. At times, this co-living situation appears symbiotic; at others, it indicates a more violent interdependence.
