The Besòs River is not only one of Barcelona’s major natural arteries, but also a central element in the city’s recent socio-economic history. Since the 1960s, the river has been overloaded with industrial waste, becoming one of Europe’s most polluted rivers. In 1995, the municipalities adjacent to the Besòs agreed to restore the river and surrounding ecosystem. This sequence of events sets the stage for Rosa Tharrats and Gabriel Ventura’s project for Manifesta 15, which started with a series of workshops with local residents. The objective of the workshops was to collectively prepare the structure and actions of a filmic-performance; they incorporated various exercises, including river walks, poetry workshops and the creation of fabric sculptures. The performance was realised by persons with deep ties to the river – the Sant Adrià de Besòs Sikh community, the Asociación de Mujeres Bienvenidas, Badalona’s Coral Clappers de Gospel and a group of three actresses. Staged on the banks of the Besòs, the performance sits somewhere between a documentary of and dreamlike vision for the river, in which wonder, poetry and song ricochet off the cement and combine with the incessant murmur of cars.
