The destruction in 1820 of the archives of the Inquisition, the Catalan Luddite violence against the first automatic looms, the navigation of the submarine Ictíneo, the famine and the riots that ensued, the internal exile and the streetcar strike of 1951 are but some of the many moments in Catalan and Spanish history that, until now, lack their image. Their visual representations were hijacked by the State, discarded by time or lost in archives. Sometimes, they simply did not assume a visual form. Recognising this, Fernando Sánchez Castillo poetically (re)constructs political images that are still pending. Intimately or publicly evoked in quotidian, clandestine or monumental moments, history appears as prosthetic memories in the artist’s watercolours.
