The British-Croatian artist Marianna Simnett reckons with the body as a site of transformation, creating hallucinatory, violent, wild, strange and disturbing worlds, inspired by children’s and folk tales as well as myths. Banquet is inspired by the myth of Athena, who is said to have crafted the first flute from a deer bone. In Simnett’s work, Athena plays for a group of gods, who have human bodies and animal heads and behaviours, and are seen mocking her puffed cheeks. Totally absorbed in her craft, Athena embraces her monstrosity. Through depictions like this one, Simnett challenges normative conceptions of what bodies can be and do; by virtue of her playing with such themes as abjection and fascination, desire and repulsion, Simnett presents a vulnerable, but empowered body. She challenges the frequent inability to empathise with difference while fostering a radical otherness that resists the status quo.
