Autotrophic Spectra is the third part of the French artist Ugo Schiavi’s Grafted-Memory-System project. This sci-fi speculative installation proposes a techno-organic ecosystem that plays with our unconscious memories and our visual imagination of post-industrial sites. Both the earth beneath the Three Chimneys and that of the neighbouring plot have been poisoned for decades, contaminated by the power station’s own discharges and those of other industrial facilities in Sant Adrià de Besòs. To create his work, Schiavi gathered plants from the adjacent plot of land, which were bound to be removed for contamination control. The plants carry the memory of their adaptation both to contamination and the extreme drought that has affected the region in recent years. Intertwined with the technical apparatus, they give birth to new, hybrid, adaptable, mythical and mutant beings, which are at once organic and synthetic, material and virtual, and in constant metamorphosis – anticipating the complexities of the future to come. The installation includes a generative video made with 3D scans of plants from the site itself, in which both the images and sounds are controlled by the plants themselves.
