In her film Arrow of Time 2,the Lithuanian artist Emilija Škarnulytė contemplates how humankind’s boundless desire for (technological) progress has led to planetary destruction. The film centres on the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, which was built in Lithuania when it was under Soviet rule and has a design that is similar to that of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Since it was decommissioned at the end of 2009 (two years before the definitive closure of the Three Chimneys), Ignalina has been undergoing a protracted dismantling process that is expected to end in 2038. The vast amount of radioactive waste that the plant has generated will remain dangerously active for upwards of 100,000 years; one of the potential solutions for dealing with the waste is to bury it beneath the seabed. Throughout the film, a serpent slithers on Ignalina’s switchboards and around a flooded Uranium mine, which fed the plant with raw materials when it was in use. The serpent evokes a future when industrial ruins are reclaimed by nature while symbolically referencing the ouroboros – the serpent that eats its own tail, succumbing to the relentless temptation for progress.
