The Lebanese artist Simone Fattal is interested in Islamic mysticism, Sufi poetry, myths from the beginning of civilization and how they relate to the current socio-political context, particularly that of the ancient Mesopotamia region. Fattal started as a painter in Beirut in the late 1960s before moving to California during Lebanon's civil war. She settled in Sausalito, where she founded and ran Post-Apollo Press. After taking an extended pause from artmaking to run her publishing house, she enrolled at the Art Institute of San Francisco in 1988 to study sculpture. One of the first works that she made was a work consisting of two small archaic figures, which she formed in wax to then be casted in bronze. The figures, Adam and Eve, could have been recovered from an archaeological site. A life-size bronze iteration of the work is on view at Manifesta 15, with Adam – tall with elongated legs – portrayed as the first prophet while Eve is more corpulent and resilient. Fattal’s life partner, the late poet and painter Etel Adnan, described her body of work as being “as real as imaginary, symbolic and primitive”. For Fattal, the sculptures are about history as a continuum. Looking at the beginning helps us understand what we have become.
