Fanja Bouts studied physics and astronomy at the University of Amsterdam as well as Moving Image at Gerrit Rietveld Academie. It was with this background and an interest in philosophy that Bouts decided to draw a map of the world, addressing problems or malpractices with which she strongly disagrees. Her work, at once a 21st century mappa mundi and a horror vacui, is full of playful and absurd characters as well as animated stories that tell a sarcastic account of our age.
Bouts’ monumental tapestry starts in the middle, with what amounts to a “Big Bang” for the capitalist world order. The work develops outwards into chaotically collapsing systems, from the way humans destroy bodies of water to the abusive practices of the bioindustries, in the name of interminable economic growth. Presented in the Monastery of Sant Cugat, Bouts’ tapestry is an existential reflection on the role of humankind in ravaging the planet as well as a plea for understanding that we are but a minuscule part of it.
