As part of the education programme of Manifesta 15, entitled Fora per fer escola, this publication aims to rediscover, contextualise and highlight the pedagogical heritage of Catalonia. It brings together a wide range of texts, images and archival documents exploring five pedagogical initiatives implemented in Catalonia over the course of the 20^th century, namely the Escola de Bosc, the Escola del Mar, the Escola Vil·la Joana, the Batec teachers’ collective and the Escoles en Lluita social movement. Inspired by the ideas and methodologies of the New Education movement, these initiatives embody an experimental and innovative educational approach that integrates artistic practice, citizenship and environmental awareness.

Structured in three parts, the publication provides historical and theoretical contextualisation, artistic research and a methodological resource tailored for teachers and educators.

The first part contextualises educational renewal movements internationally. Through various texts, contributors analyse and unravel the interrelationships between Catalonia and the educational framework spanning Europe and Latin America, both before and after Franco’s dictatorship. This section includes contributions by researchers and cultural agents such as Mónica Amieva, Sofía de Juan, Nicolás Arata, Carmen Agulló and Renata Cervetto.

The second part focuses on the work carried out by the five invited artists and researchers, who explore the archives of the aforementioned pedagogical initiatives: the three schools (Escola del Mar, Escola de Bosc and Escola Vil·la Joana), the Batec teachers’ collective and the Escoles en Lluita activist movement. This section presents reflections on artistic research by Sara Torres-Vega, Anaïs Florin, Paisanaje with Inland, Diversorium, and Massa Salvatge with Lluc Mayol.

The third part of the publication, the Pedagogical Oracle, serves as a methodological resource for teachers and educators. Produced by the artist and educator Alba Oller, in collaboration with 73 teachers from the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, the Oracle aims to catalyse collective reflection on contemporary teaching practices and political responsibility for education, while also strengthening teachers’ support networks.
