The municipal area of El Prat de Llobregat extends entirely across the deltaic plain, between the right bank of the Llobregat River and the Remolar Lake, along an 8 km long seafront.
Territory and nature have been, and still are, two elements that over the centuries have conditioned the human presence in the Delta. The first known documented evidence that speaks of the existence of a stable settlement in the lands of El Prat corresponds to the 10th century, but the urban centre of the population did not exist until the 18th century. Industry arrived in El Prat in 1917, brought upon by its proximity to Barcelona, the existence of abundant and cheap water, good communications and a potential available workforce. Throughout the 1990s, El Prat had to adapt to a new socio-economic reality marked by a deindustrialisation of the economy.
Today, El Prat seeks to manage the tension between the ecological and environmental preservation of natural spaces and the development of the port and the airport – which occupy approximately one third of its territory.
