Alternative Models
As a European biennial, we continuously critically reflect on what biennials represent, especially regarding racism, inequality and xenophobia while also considering the impact of the global pandemic, the ecological crisis and the neoliberal crisis.
Our old artistic model, as a nomadic biennial producing a series of exhibitions of contemporary art, was no longer sufficient. In response, we have transformed Manifesta, turning the organisation into an interdisciplinary, knowledge-and-research-producing platform, focused on participatory practices with local communities to make the biennial more responsive to local interests, needs and urgencies. In a changing and post-pandemic world, Manifesta has rethought the biennial on several levels: changing our methodology from top-down to bottom-up participatory.
Every two years, Manifesta reinvents itself, and its working model, according to the interest, urgencies and needs of its Host City. See the image below to discover the model and process Manifesta is creating for Manifesta 15 Barcelona.
